Portera Joins Freshly Formed WS-I

January 7, 2009 nnyq.com edit Portera, a Web services provider that specializes in professional services automation (PSA), announced today that it has joined the Web Services Interoperability Organization (WS-I).

The WS-I was formed just last month to help accelerate the development and deployment of interoperable Web services across a variety of platforms, applications and programming languages. The group's prestigious list of founders include Accenture, BEA, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Intel, Microsoft, and SAP. (See Tech Firms Forge Web Services Consortium.) About 50 others companies (ranging from Groove Networks to the Ford Motor Company) have signed on with WS-I.

To many industry observers, the phrase Web services remains broadly (and loosely) defined. The Campbell, Calif.-based Portera calls Web services "modular, extensible application and analytic services based on industry standards that are accessible via the Internet." The company said that it decided to join the WS-I to help ensure that the standards resulting from the organizations' efforts address the realities of global Web services deployment and use.

Portera recently celebrated the three-year anniversary of its ServicePort suite of Web services. The ServicePort suite for PSA is designed to enable organizations serving commercial and government clients to more effectively manage their finances, resources, projects and relationships.

"Over the last three years, we've learned a tremendous amount about the practical realities of delivering Web services solutions globally over the public Internet," said David Knight, the general manager in charge of Portera's Web services solutions. "We are excited about working with fellow market leaders in the context of the WS-I to help ensure that the standards developed meet the demands of the real world."

Portera reports that it signed 121 new deals and grew revenues by more than 125 percent in 2001. The company's client list includes Agilent, Apple, Booz-Allen & Hamilton, British Telecom, Lockheed Martini, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Raytheon and Siemens.

Portera is currently listed as a Top 20 ASP by ASPnews.
