Microsoft Into Mobile Video Content Delivery
November 19, 2008 nnyq.com editSoftware giant Microsoft on Thursday announced it would partner with TWI Interactive (TWIi) and Vadiator Technology to roll out a video streaming delivery platform for cell phone operators.
The launch of Microsoft's MobileVision platform is seen as Redmond's answer to rival RealNetworks, which has racked up significant client wins throughout Europe for its Helix Mobile platform.
The three-way deal calls for Microsoft to provide Windows Media and Microsoft .NET technology expertise to TWIi, which is tasked with marketing the service to mobile operators. Bellevue, Wash.-based Vidiator will provide technology to handle encoding, decoding, transcoding and streaming of the video content.
MobileVision will serve up an all-in-one content management platform for video content delivery to cell phones, integrating transcoding, streaming, billing and customer-care service. Microsoft Windows Media 9 Series technology, the service will adopt the 3GPP (define) format to enable delivery to a wide range of handsets using either Windows or non-Windows operating systems.
It has been fitted with technology to handle Video acquisition from one source or multiple sources; presentation of content to end users or customers via mobile video portals; and service management tools to handle billing, customer care and reporting.
MobileVision will be marketed as a hosted service from Mass.-based TWIi will full support for multiple video formats, mobile handsets and 2.5G/3G network technologies.
