OzEmail to Offer Satellite Internet in Australia

The service will allow Internet subscribers to achieve download speeds significantly faster than currently available via conventional dial-up PSTN connections.
"The trial will allow us to determine the optimal technology and content mix and how we can most efficiently provide high-speed Internet access across the vast Australian landscape," said Sean Howard, chief executive officer of OzEmail.
"For OzEmail, the satellite trial represents another stage in the development of a more compelling service offering for customers by merging the delivery of pay-TV and Internet access."
The trials are expected to begin by year's end.
The Australian ISP has been rumored to be the target of a takeover bid by either America Online Inc or Cable & Wireless Optus Ltd., although the companies refuse to comment.
